The Silent Sea (2021 TV Show)
The Silent Sea
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 8
Format: Netflix
Genre: Sci-fi, Mystery, Thriller, Dystopian
Rating: 3/5 (I tailored down from out of 10)
Dr. Song Jian is a prior astrobiologist. She essentially works in the science field still, however is on a different type of line of work. After the death of her sister, a premier astronaut/scientist at the Balhae Station on the moon, Dr. Song is now a gold card water member. Why is this important?
In the future, the Earth has zero water. Like it's gone. Oceans have dried, the desalination of the ocean has caused it to kill all fish, infant mortality rates are at 1 in 10. The world and humanity is dying. Everyone has different access to water, from red to blue to gold members, and the regulation of this resource is at an all time high.
Dr. Song receives a gold card status after her sister's death on the space station, which leaves her lack luster in personality and often, she seems emotional detached and unhappy. Dr. Song is given the chance by the government to go to Balhae Station and secure three mystery samples, the contents of which, few even know.
With the help of a doctor, the captain and co-captains and other astronauts, Dr. Song ends up on the moon at Balhae Station and starts to piece together how the station closed down five years earlier and what is wrong with it.
SPOILERS.
As we descend deeper into the realm of why the station was there when other countries pulled out and why the station is essentially on a need-to-know basis. Different areas are locked down on a Level 1 clearance. The real reason why this station is here and why it is so important to the government is lunar water. Lunar water is exactly what is says it is, however the only difference is the water acts like a virus on humans and turns their blood and body into water. The human host dies and the water multiples and dies with the host.
Enter Luna 073.
Luna is human experimentation. Dr. Song's sister worked in cloning and experimentation to find a way for humans to be able to consume lunar water and survive. Luna is the 73rd human experiment. She is like a human, however, she moves quicker, she has a double eyelid like a frog or other amphibian, gills and is unaffected by lunar water. If anything, lunar water actually helps her wounds heal faster.
Dr. Song befriends Luna and helps her out, thus receiving essentially her assistance and help as the station begins to flood.
THE OPINION.
It's ironic I started to watch this show after I started watching The Expanse. They are very similar in nature. Exceptionally so, like odd the plot is so similar. Like incredibly odd. However, I ended up dropping the Expanse and ended up finishing The Silent Sea. Why? The Expanse is too large of a world. It tries to be Space Game of Thrones. The Silent Sea tailors down the world and focuses on just one crew in the one station and makes the plot more linear while being shot extremely beautifully and doing more subtle acting than the crew on the Expanse.
Why I didn't rate this more stars? Its personal. Everyone's mileage will vary. My opinion is while I liked the story and plot structure more than other shows and it is also shot beautifully, there were moments that were completely dumb, like the Captain throwing in the towel at the end, the fact that ONLY women pretty much survived and all the men died. My biggest complaint about it is the fact that for a Korean drama (which I watch a lot of), there's always a touching emotional moment that makes me cry like a little baby (like episode 3 or is it 4, of Crash Landing on You). I SHOULD have cried like a little baby about the Captain and his daughter and I didn't at all. I should have cried more? Like I'm an emotional person okay? Like I cried the first time I heard Hello by Adele. THIS??? NOPPPPE. And that disappointed me. Sad face.
Overall? Decent show, non-emotional. Good if you're not trying to cry the entire time you watch it.
